I was an active member of a Whitewater rafting group and we were always concerned about safety and responses. Every trip included a safety talk by the trip leader and we had actually spent some time honing that talk and detailing the points to include as we always had newbies along on most trips.

I am wondering what you would consider valid points for a hiking safety talk? I would like to start putting something together for our club and standardize a short talk at the beginning of any club hike.

Some ideas include:

– identifying who has key pieces of equipment (maps, communication device, first aid etc)
Anything else to add to this list? Bear spray comes to mind

– what to do if the group gets separated (looking for ideas here as it always is a worry)

– hike specific hazards and how best to avoid or handle (fall exposure, stream crossings etc)

– any environmental issues to be aware of, no tromping in alpine meadows, that sort of stuff

Looking for ideas, your help is greatly appreciated.

In a pinch, would a bicycle puncture repair kit work on an inflatable pad.

I'm in the early stages of planning a 3 month trip and am thinking about the worst cast scenarios.

I'm planning on taking an air bed for comfort given the distance/time I'll be going and am just trying to think outside of the box. Given that puncture repair kits can be just as simple as a plaster nowadaysy question is would they work for an air bed?

Anyone got any thoughts?
