I’m a new hiker and never usually do more than a 1-2 mile hike, so I’ve never run into a situation where I had to do anything more than take a piss. Well today I accidentally trapped myself in a 5 mile hike right after breakfast (I read the trail map wrong and only realized after I was an hour in). I held off for as long as I could but eventually my body was like hey buddy this is coming out whether you like it or not.

Long story short, I realized today that I did not know what the etiquette was around shitting in the woods. Of course I went off trail, found a nice tree to squat behind and covered up my sins. But is there some unspoken rule about how to get it done?

I am going to patagonia next mid-february for a month, then continuing my woldtrip. I am looking for a puff jacket, the rest of the setup is already there. I will mainly use it during hikes/ evening at camps.

My current setup:

200g/m² Icebreaker baselayer
260g/m² Icebreaker Quantum Zoneknit hoody
Patagonia Triolet hardshell

Now my question is, what SYNTHETIC insulation would you recommend? temperatures can get close to 0°C.
I had a look on the patagonia micropuff Hoody but i am not sure if this will be warm enough. Any recommendations are highly appreciated! Budget is 500 USD max.

When I was about 13 years old I backpacked through dark canyon with my cousins and their Boy Scout troup. (gorgeous hike btw)

That night my uncle told us a story about several sightings in the 1800s of a monster they called the dark canyon screamer.

My uncle isn’t really the type to tell a pure bullshit story he pulled out his ass cause he explained it to us more like he was presenting a PowerPoint rather than a campfire story (he’s a doctor and a nerd lol)

said there were 4 journal accounts from 4 different people describing a giant black haired ape Bigfoot type creature that would make an ear piercing screech. One account from a pioneer wrote about traveling through the canyon with a small caravan. They heard a shriek echo through the canyon looked up and saw the dark canyon screamer roll a boulder towards the caravan from atop a cliff in an attempt to crush them but missed them and then ran off.

Idk it’s a little fuzzy but I’ve scoured the internet for anything on the dark canyon screamer but found nothing.

Maybe my uncle is just full of shit but several of the other boys round the campfire knew the story already so it must just be a really local thing.

Maybe someone here knows?
