Beginner hiking – how much do I need to build up my stamina before I go on a week-long hiking trip?

I am a reasonably healthy, 29 year old woman, but don't go on long trips. I have an ambition, this year, to go on a week-long hiking/camping trip.

I currently live in a major capital city, but every so often go back to visit my family who live in a very rural, semi-mountainous area. While I am there, I often go on 7-12 mile walks. However, this is rarely one after another, and never with hiking/camping equipment. How can I move into being able to do a long hiking trip without damaging my body?

Hey all!

In October I’ll travel to Switzerland for a family visit and some hiking. I’m thinking of summiting Mount Säntis. For those who have done that: will the trail to the summit be accessible and safe? Since I’ll be there around the 25th of October, I expect there to be some snow already. I have the experience and stamina to do a hike like this, but I am unsure whether October is too late in the season.
