How to train or how to start?

Perhaps a silly question but I had a hip replacement this year and I want to make the most of my newfound ability to walk without pain, but I was never a hiker. I used to run.

But how do you ramp up hiking in a way that won't cause issues? I am based in NYC and I've seen a ton of groups doing upstate hikes but I'm intimidated by things like "easy 7 miles" because I don't know if I can do that. So how do I build up confidence and mileage in a fun/doable way? Are there things I can do in the gym to help? Thanks
