Partner Wants To Solo Hike; Please Help!
Hi, so long story short my fiance loves hiking, but also loves exploring and will always go off trail. He also has no sense of direction and will get lost. I love him and want to support his hobbies but im so terrified of something happening (I can't join him because of medical reasons, but im not an outdoorsy person anyways).
Hikes for him are usually a few hour ordeal, maybe 1-4 hours at a time. Never done anything more advanced like multiple days and camping out (although he likes the idea).
Anyways, I want to get him some supplies for Christmas but not really sure where to start, could anyone please help direct me on what to look for/would be necessary?
I've heard somewhere that something like a fancy gps that can call 911 from the middle of nowhere is mandatory incase he were to be injured. Probably some kind of pepper spray too for protection and a whistle? Any and all help would be appreciated!
Edit:
Thank you so much everyone, I didn't expect any responses! I should probably add that I love him dearly and know he can handle himself, but I also know he's gotten us lost as night set in on a 2 mile walk/hike one time. He doesn't handle stress very well and really has no sense of direction at all. (He is very very capable in other matters, I promise)
If it matters, we're in our mid twenties and on the east coast. I'd like to buy him more over time so budget isn't a major concern, but I could spend around $200 now.

Does anyone in New York know a spot that looks like this pic? I have a vision for a creative photo :) The important parts are a long flat path up to a bench which looks over a view.
